The RELi Collective

Resilient Design pioneers living solutions for our changing, challenging world, ensuring a regenerative future for all.”

Who creates and develops RELi?

The RELi™ Collective is an informal gathering of creative pioneers developing the concepts, actions and metrics of Resilient Design.

RELi™ (pronounced Rely) was developed over the past ten years through the generous participation of professionals, experts, and graduate students at Perkins + Will,  The C3 Living Design ProjectThe Capital Markets Partnership’s National Safety + Resiliency Committee, AIA Minnesota COTE, University of Minnesota School of Architecture and the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

The RELi consensus standard development process was administered by The Institute for Market Transformation to Sustainability (MTS) in 2014. MTS is an ANSI-accredited standards developer following an ANSI-approved National Consensus Process. The Action List + Credit Catalog are resources included in the RELi Green + Resilient Property Underwriting and Finance Standard. USGBC was the program manager for RELi between 2017 and 2021. MTS resumed management in 2022

The Principle Investigator for the RELi Acton List + Credit Catalog is Douglas Pierce AIA, LEED Fellow, Senior Associate with Perkins+Will, and Professor in Practice at the University of Minnesota. He lead the USGBC RELi National Steering Committee between 2017 and 2021. Along with other pioneers, such as the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities program, RELi has helped to inspire the broader building + design industry to engage in resilience actively. We hope you join us in the ongoing and evolving pursuit of a resilient, regenerative + sustainable living world.

RELi Professionals

RELi Resilience Accredited Professionals are on the pioneering edge of design, engaging one of the world’s most challenging problems: Climate Change and Social Equity Adaptation.

After 35+ years of creative development focused on climate mitigation, resource conservation, ecological health, and human wellness, the sustainable design community is expanding that vision to create a just, vital, and adaptable living world.

RELi Accredited Professionals + Applied System Specialists (RELi APS) have completed the comprehensive RELi and Resilience+ Pilot Training Course covering the application of systems thinking and RELi requisites + credits. Applied systems thinking is used to leverage the individual concepts embodied by RELi into integrated responses that effectively improve the resilience of buildings, neighborhoods, and communities. The pilot course uses an interactive, project-based learning approach that brings participating professionals firsthand experience with real-world applications of RELi and resilient design.

RELi Accreditation Pilot was developed by the C3 Living Design Project and implemented by Perkins&Will as a pilot project. The Accreditation combines conventional testing with robust interactive online translational learning and instructor oversight. The Accreditation program was put on Hold by the USGBC in 2018. Existing RELi APs retain their Accreditation indefinitely.
