RELi · Resilient Design Guidelines + Certification
Resilient Design actively solves the issues of a Rapidly Changing + Challenging World to create a Vital Future for All.
The RELi Resilient Design Guide
RELi™ is a holistic project guide, rating system and third party certification system available to projects, organizations and governments of any scale.
Welcome to the RELi Resilient Design Guide. RELi is an ecologically rooted guide and project rating system similar to LEED®, but with added emphasis on resilience. The RELi guide includes new resilience-based Actions (requisites + credits) pioneered for RELi. RELi also aggregates action items from other design guidelines offering a comprehensive catalog of options for creating project specific paths to certification.
The current need for resiliency is urgent. In order to sustain a safe and vibrant quality-of-life, we must respond holistically to the weather extremes, economic disruption, and resource depletion that are now becoming common place. Our societal and planetary well-being depends on the cooperative interaction of all elements in our lives: social, economic and environmental. By coupling a comprehensive living design Credit Catalog with integrative design process, RELi lays the groundwork for advanced, and even transformative resilient, regenerative and healthy outcomes that support the whole of life.
Design method is an important part of achieving high-performing resilient design outcomes. In response, RELi combines a comprehensive + expandable action list with an integrative process that we call the Living Design Approach. This universal method is embodied in the RELi Panoramic Approach category as a series of requisites + credits. The RELi Reference Brief, along with other resources are openly available for use by project teams of all types.
RELi Categories include: Panoramic Approach, Hazard Preparedness, Hazard Adaptation, Community Vitality, Productivity / Health + Diversity, Energy / Water + Food, Materials + Artifacts and Applied Creativity.
What is Resilient Design?
Resilience is an essential concept in the field of design and sustainability. Resilient design is about creating buildings and communities that can withstand shocks or challenges, stay healthy, and adapt to changing circumstances. Think of it like a robust, flexible structure or system that can bounce back after facing difficulties.
The RELi Resilient Design Guides provide specific ways to measure and evaluate how well buildings, neighborhoods, and communities embody resilience. RELi focuses on creating designs that are not only strong but also diverse and forward-thinking. This means considering different possibilities and being prepared for the future.
Overall, resilience is about creating spaces and communities that can face challenges, adapt, and come back even stronger. It’s like building a safety net for the future. A resilient society can handle unexpected events and recover from them when needed. It requires people to think ahead, plan, and be ready to adjust when necessary.
